Welcome to Exeter Public School

Principal Rick van MaanenIt is my pleasure to welcome you to Exeter Public School ~ Home of the Eagles.
At Exeter Public, we are dedicated to continuous improvement in all areas for the students and families we serve. We work hard to develop a strong sense of pride and commitment in our school. We value the many parent and community volunteers that work with our students, including parents, high school peer mentors, retired teachers and volunteers such as Big Brothers and Sisters.  Our active School Council, Safe Schools Committee, and Eco - Council provide guidance and support by collecting and compiling parent and student perceptions, fund-raising to support programs and equipment, and planning fun and enriching activities for our students. The support we receive from the surrounding community is “second-to-none” and is part of what makes E.P.S. a truly great place to be!

During the 2010 - 2011 school year, Exeter Public will continue our work on high yield instructional strategies and school improvement practices, with a particular focus on problem solving in mathematics.  Our balanced school day timetable allows for longer periods of uninterrupted instruction, within which the components of a balanced literacy program remain a key focus.  As always, we will continue to foster the ten positive character attributes that have been adopted by the AMDSB.  We look forward to supporting this important endeavour in our day-to-day interactions with students and with each other, and by offering a variety of related activities, guest speakers, and assemblies.

We opened this school year (2010 - 2011) with an enrolment of approximately 330 students (JK-8).  Special needs students are integrated into regular classroom settings with some resource withdrawal and Educational Assistant support for high needs students. Services to special needs students include Hearing, Speech, Vision, Occupational and Physical Therapy. Some of the special offerings at E.P.S. include a Healthy Snack Program, Friday Lunches, Peer Mentors, and Early Intervention Literacy Programs.

Exeter Public is located in the town of Exeter in Huron County, which is on highway # 4, north of London, south of Clinton and west of Lake Huron.  We serve the communities of Exeter and Huron Park. Many of our students walk to school; a percentage of our students are bussed.  The school was originally the town high school built in 1939.  It has gone through a series of renovations in 1950, 1954, 1960, 1973, 1977, 2003, and most recently, the summer of 2007. Our library portrays a theme of flight, incorporating elements from both Exeter P.S. and McCurdy P.S. libraries.  McCurdy Public School used to be situated on the Centralia air base, and some of its memorabilia such as an airplane wing, photos, a map table and resource books on aviation have helped to create a unique and beautiful library space at E.P.S.  You can read quotes from the old E.P.S. library on our new walls.

Our dedicated staff include teachers, educational assistants, a technical resource assistant, secretary, custodians, vice-principal and principal. Our collective goal is to provide quality experiences for our children, to focus on and build on their strengths, to create a safe place for them to learn, to develop increased student responsibility and independence, and to acknowledge, honour and support individual student differences – in short, to make Exeter Public School the best it can be.
